Alternative Classes
Alternative
classes are geared towards students that have emotional or behavioral needs. Most
students in these classes have a primary disability of EBD or OHD.
Alternative English 9/10
Prerequisite/Selection Process: IEP team recommendation
Intended Audience: Students with IEP in grades 9 and 10
Credit: Up to three trimesters = .5 credit per trimester
Major Outcomes:
• Writing process and skills development
• Fiction and nonfiction, literacy and critical thinking skills
• Prep for Minnesota GRAD writing test
Instructional Focus: Taught by SPED teacher, individualized instruction and behavioral support
Alternative English 11/12
Prerequisite/Selection Process: IEP team recommendation
Intended Audience: Students with IEP in grades 11 and 12
Credit: Up to three trimesters = .5 credit per trimester
Major Outcomes:
• Writing process and skills development
• Fiction and nonfiction, literacy and critical thinking skills
• Job related

Alternative Social Studies 9/10

Intended Audience: Students with IEP in grades 9 and 10

• Knowledge of government systems
• Knowledge of American history
Instructional Focus: Taught by SPED teacher with individualized instruction and behavioral support
Alternative Social Studies 11/12
Prerequisite/Selection Process: IEP team recommendation
Intended Audience: Students with IEP in grades 11 and 12
Credit: Up to three trimesters = .5 credit per trimester
Major Outcomes:
• Knowledge of world history
• Knowledge of economics
• Knowledge of the legal system
Instructional Focus: Taught by SPED teacher with individualized instruction and behavioral support
Alternative Math
Prerequisite/Selection Process: IEP team recommendation
Intended Audience: Students with IEP in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12
Credit: Up to three trimesters = .5 credit per trimester
Major Outcomes:
• Basic mathematics skills
Instructional Focus: Taught by SPED teacher using materials which parallel the mainstream curriculum and behavioral support
Alternative Self-Improvement
Prerequisite/Selection Process: IEP team recommendation
Intended Audience: Students with IEP in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12
Credit: Up to three trimesters = .5 credit per trimester
Major Outcomes:
• Management of youth issues, such as stress, peer pressure, relationships, decision making and family issues
Instructional Focus: Taught by SPED teacher, individualized instruction and behavioral support
