First grade students are encouraged to read at home 10-15 (or more) minutes at home every day.  Our school-wide goal is 20 minutes of reading at home every day.  This reading can be done alone or with someone at home.

Tips for Reading with your Student (from the MN Humanities Commission):

    1.  Spend time with your student talking, telling stories, and singing songs.  These are fun and important activities that help students get ready for reading.

    2.  Read to and with your student.  This shows that daily reading and spending time together is important.

    3.  Let your student help choose the books your read together.  This will help keep your student's interest.

    4.  Find a comfortable place to read and sit close to your student.  This helps create a special feeling at reading time.

    5.  Change your voice and the pace that you read to fit the story.  This makes the story more interesting to your student.

    6.  After reading a book, talk about the story.  Discussing the pictures and the main ideas in a book helps develop understanding.

    7.  Let your stucent see you reading books, newspapers, mail, and magazines.  This sets and example for students that you enjoy and value reading.

    8.  Take your student to the library regularly.  Libraries are a wonderful place to find books and so much more.
