Weekly spelling lists will be available on Day 1 of weeks 1-5 of each Reading Wonders unit (week 6 is a unit summary week and there are no new spelling words on Day 1 or tests on Day 5 during a week 6). The spelling words can be found on the weekly purple Reading Wonders sheet sent home with students on Day 1 of weeks 1-5. Spelling words will be tested every Day 5. Information on how to access the weekly spelling lists online can be found here.Students will practice weekly spelling words at school. Reviewing the words at home reinforces what they practice at school. Below are some at-home spelling practice ideas.At-Home Spelling Practice Ideas:
· Write the words and make flashcards.
· Paint the words.
· Read a story. See how many times you can find your words.
· Print/trace your words with your fingers five or more times in flour, salt, or sugar.
· See how many times you can write your words in one minute.
· Use small objects, such as dry beans or buttons, to form your words.
· Use your favorite snack (examples: Cherrios or Rice Krispies) to form your words and then eat it.
· Record yourself saying and spelling your words.
· Use colored chalk to write your words on the sidewalk or your driveway.
· Spread peanut butter on bread. Add raisins to form your words.
· Use cooked spaghetti to form your words.
· Stamp your words using assorted stamps and colors.
· Form your words out of alphabet cereal or noodles.
· Use play-doh to make words.
· Print the words on someone’s back using your fingers. Have the person guess your words.
· Use magnetic letters to make words.
· Use foam letters in the bathtub to make words.
· Draw a picture for each word.
· Use yarn or string to form your words.
· Use colored crayons or markers to copy your words in as many different color combinations as possible.
· Write sentences using each word.
· Draw your favorite character saying your words.
· Find the letters of your words in a newspaper or magazine. Cut out the letters and spell your words.
· Use bread or cookie dough to shape your words and bake them.
· Use beans, pasta, or rice to form your words. Glue them to construction paper or tag board.
· Read a letter from the mail. Look for your words and list them.
· Write three or more words that rhyme with each of your words.
· Fold a sheet of paper in fourths. Write your word one time in each square and decorate the squares.
· Write a message to someone using your words.
· Use a computer to type each words three times. Try different fonts.
· Use glue and glitter or glitter glue to make your words.
· Use hands and feet to clap, snap, or stop as you chant the letters of each word.
· Use alphabet beads to form words. Make a necklace.
