Many parents and guardians know that math skills are important, but the thought of working everyday on math literacy may seem difficult.  Most do not know where to begin.  It is important to spend time talking with kids about math, but it takes effort to see and talk about the numbers all around us.  The most important thing parents can do regarding mathematics is to be positive.  Here are some simple ideas for working on math at home:

    • choose and add up the cost of groceries (giving them a limit)
    • Use money to make correct change
    • while in the car, look at street signs and license plates and practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing the digits.
    • playing cards (addition WAR, multiplication WAR)
    • recognizing patterns and shapes nearly everywhere
