Course Description Including Prerequisites:

Course content materials include the most current Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Educational Standards appropriate for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and utilizes more current principles as needed. The EMT course provides preparation in prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Major topic areas covered include introduction to EMS, roles and responsibilities of an EMS provider, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology of diseases. In addition, patient assessment will be introduced. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to take the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Certification Test and will be eligible to apply for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the National Registry and the state of Minnesota EMSRB.

Course Content:

The EMT-Basic will "size-up" the scene to determine that the scene is safe, to identify the mechanism of injury or nature of illness, and the total number of patients, and to request additional help if necessary. In the absence of law enforcement, creates a safe traffic environment. Using a limited amount of equipment, render emergency medical care to adults, children, and infants based on assessment findings. 

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Review and build on knowledge of the human body and pathophysiology
• Assessing Emergency Scenes and pre-hospital victims
• EMT basic Pharmacology
• Respiratory and Cardiac Emergencies
• Drug and Alcohol related crises
• Environmental and Behavioral emergencies
• Trauma Emergencies
• Pediatric Emergencies, Geriatric Emergencies and Special Population Emergencies
• Functioning in the pre-hospital care environment
• Airway management
• Administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
• Providing emergency medical care of simple and multiple system trauma such as:
  • Controlling hemorrhage,
  • Bandaging wounds,
  • Manually stabilizing injured extremities.

• Providing emergency medical care to:
  • Assist in childbirth
  • Manage general medical complaints, altered mental status, seizures, environmental emergencies, behavioral emergencies and psychological crises.
  • Care and treatment of shock

• Performs emergency moves and assists other EMS providers in the use of the prescribed techniques and appliances for safely removing the patient.
• Under the direction and supervision of other EMS providers, assists in lifting the stretcher, placing the stretcher in the ambulance, and seeing that the patient and stretcher are secured.
• In cases of multiple casualty incidents, performs basic triage.

Prerequisites:

Must be 18 years of age and a Senior in High School.

Have a valid driver’s license

Possess current American Heart Association-Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) CPR certification.

Completion of Anoka Tech / STEP course EMED 1113 (EMR) with a grade of C or better.

Student Contributions:

• Students are expected to be in class on time, and be prepared.
• Students are to ask questions as needed to enhance their learning
• Students are expected to clean up after themselves in lab and in the classroom, keeping both respectfully clean.
• Students are expected to be good citizens of the program, college and EMS profession.
• Uniforms are not required for daily classroom activities but there is a dress code for attending clinicals. A white button-down shirt or polo, black or navy blue pants and black or navy boots. Tennis shoes may not be substituted.
• Should uniforms be desired students can find them at Aspen Mills in Spring Lake Park. Students are responsible for paying for their uniforms.

NOTE:  There is NO extra credit offered for this course.

Attendance:

Attendance in class is mandatory.  No more than 9 hours or 6 full classes

can be missed if the student is to certify and receive college credit. Regardless of whether or not the student is excused, it counts as a loss in seat time.

Be on time for class.  Repeated tardiness will result in time lost for the student. For every 3 instances where a student is tardy, the student loses 1 hour of seat time in the class.

It is the student’s responsibility to communicate with the teacher when he/she is absent to determine any make up work or missed information.

Academic Honesty: 

The primary academic mission of Anoka Technical College and S.T.E.P. is the exploration and dissemination of knowledge.  Academic honesty and integrity are integral to the academic process.  Academic dishonesty--cheating, plagiarism and collusion—are serious offenses which undermine the education process and the learning experience for the entire college community.

It is expected that Anoka Technical College and S.T.E.P. students will understand and adhere to the concept of academic integrity and to the standards of conduct prescribed in the College’s Policy on Student Code of Conduct (Student Handbook).  It is expected that students will assume responsibility for their work and that materials submitted in fulfillment of course, program, and college academic requirements must represent students’ own efforts.

Recording of Lectures:

Never, under any circumstances, should a student audio or video record any lecture or portion of the course content presented without expressed permission of the instructor and all students present in the course.  See student handbook for complete policy on recording of lectures.

Articulated College Credit:

This course is articulated through CTEcredit.mn. Students earning a “C” or better can earn 5 college credits. Although other colleges have honored these credits; it is up to the individual college.  There is no guarantee that they will grant the credits.

Concurrent Enrollment:

This course is concurrent with Anoka Technical College.  The curriculum in this class is the same as the college curriculum. When concurrently enrolled, you are officially enrolled at the Anoka Technical College. The grade you earn in this class will appear on an official transcript from Anoka Tech and is worth 5 college credits.

Professional Certificate:

This course does not certify students as an EMT-Basic at the completion of the course. Only a state agency may do so. Successful completion of the course will allow the student to be considered eligible to take the certifying exams.

The state certifying exam has several components:

1. Take and pass the NREMT Psychomotor skills exam. This is set up in conjunction with Anoka Technical College with Certified State Testers. You must pass the practical exam before you are allowed to take the written exam. Cost: $120

2. The written exam is a set of multiple choice questions, this is taken by computer at a certified testing facility (Pearson Vue) in Minnesota. The student will contact the testing company to arrange a date to take the written test. Cost $80

3. Other required components:

• 10 Patient contacts during proctored clinicals or ride-a-longs.
• Criminal Background Check and fingerprinting $20 + $9.10
• Mantoux Test at a candidate’s clinic – Cost depends on health insurance
• Completion of FEMA NIMS online courses 100, 200 and 700
• Passing all Unit Exams with 70% or better. See next page.
• Must pass the EMED 1114 with a grade of C or better

4. Once the student has passed National Registry’s computer based test, they will log in to the EMSRB website and fill out the application for certification in the state of Minnesota. In order to maintain the certification the EMT must complete all recertification requirements with-in 2 years.

To be successful in this class:

• Read the chapters before class
• Complete the homework packets before the tests – Study Guides must be completed in full. Any Study Guides that are handed in and found to be missing information will be returned to the student and will receive a 0.
• Participate in class. Those of you that are not attempting to certify are expected to help students who are certifying practice for the skills test.
• Keep up. This is a college course with a fast pace.
• Starting this class with a solid work ethic. What you get out of this class is directly related to the amount of work and study you put into it.
  Stick with it. You can do this!

EXAMS, National Registry Test Prep and Additional Information

You have Six Exams that you MUST pass with a 70% or better to move on to take the National Registry computer-based test (CBT). They are as follows:

AIRWAY – This includes but is not limited to Chapters 10, 15,16

CARDIOLOGY – This includes but is not limited to Chapters 14,15,17

MEDICAL – This includes but is not limited to Chapters 7-24, 38 & 39

TRAUMA – This includes but is not limited to Chapters 27-36

OPERATIONS – This includes but is not limited to Chapters 42-45

EMT PREPARATORY EXAM – This includes all Chapters

You will get 3 chances to pass each module. Use your retakes wisely.

NOTICE:

Due to our limited class time and because you learned some of the information in EMR, you will notice that there are some chapters we will not cover in class. These chapters include: 1-6, 9, 12, 25, 26 and 41.

Information from these chapters could and probably will show up on the final test. You are responsible to read these chapters on your own and refresh the information.
