Course Description:
Intermediate Algebra with College Foundations is a 3-trimester class that includes all of the topics from Intermediate Algebra, plus a variety of targets that will prepare students for college success.
Trimester 2 Algebra Topics: College Foundation Targets:
Unit 7 - Exponential Functions ➼ Cooperative Learning
Unit 8 - Quadratic Functions ➼ Mindset of Learning
Unit 9 - One- and Two-Variable Inequalities ➼ Study and Test-Taking Strategies
Unit 10 - Simplifying & Solving ➼ Time Management & Organization
➼ Integrity and Respect
➼ Reflection and Self-Assessment
Textbook:
A spiral-bound paperback textbook is provided for students to keep. The textbook will be an integral part of the course and will be needed in order to be successful. Students will be able to access the textbook online through their Lock & Key (ahschools.us).
Materials Needed Daily:
Pencil(s), textbook, 3-ring binder or folder, notebook or loose-leaf paper, school planner.
Classroom Expectations:
- All guidelines listed in the Cardinal Student handbook.
- Be prepared and on time for class each day with homework completed.
- Demonstrate maturity, respect toward self and others, and behave appropriately.
- Must have a pass signed by your teacher to leave the classroom.
- Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. All parties involved will be referred to their assistant principal.
Gradebook:
Students will have two separate gradebooks, one for algebra content and one for College Foundations skills. Algebra content will be assessed using Standards Based Grading. College Foundations skills will be assessed using Percentage Based Grading. Students receive one credit for 3 trimesters of math content and one half of an elective credit for college foundations.
Absent Work:
Students are responsible for coordinating the completion of missing work with his/her teacher.
Tests:
Individual tests and team tests are given to assess students’ understanding of the learning targets. All individual tests are able to be retaken, but team tests will not. Students will receive one week to complete a retake. Retakes are completed outside of regular class time.
Homework:
Homework will not be included in the Intermediate Algebra gradebook. It will only be accounted for in the College Foundations gradebook under the Practice Work category.
Standards Based Grades:
Intermediate Algebra 90% Individual Tests 4: Mastery A: 3.70 to 4.00 C+: 2.55 to 2.74
10% Final 3: Proficiency A-: 3.50 to 3.69 C: 2.20 to 2.54
2: Developing B+: 3.30 to 3.49 C-: 2.00 to 2.19
1: Novice B: 2.95 to 3.29
0: Insufficient B-: 2.75 to 2.94 NO CREDIT: 0 to 1.99
The levels listed (mastery, proficiency, developing proficiency, novice, and insufficient) represent the student’s most recent or most frequent level of understanding of a standard or learning target depending on the teacher’s determination of what is most accurate. Students earning grades of A, B, or C will earn credit for the course. Students earning a grade of F will not earn credit for the course. Our intention is to help students move toward algebraic proficiency.
Above all, the goal of this course is to facilitate growth within each standard and learning target for each individual, a task that, when successful, will undoubtedly aid students in future mathematical endeavors.
Percentage Based Grades:
