Hello. My name is Crystal Lea Scott, and I have the great pleasure of instructing the Salon, Spa & Barbering Careers students here at S.T.E.P.  As an instructor, I could not be more excited for the opportunities that this job presents to me, and to each of you! I have been an instructor at S.T.E.P. for going on 12 years now, and in the Anoka-Hennepin School district for a total of 13 years. I, myself, am a proud product of the Anoka-Hennepin school district, as a 2001 Anoka High School graduate. While in high school I attended Anoka Ramsey Community College as a PSEO student to earn general education credits, and was able to successfully complete over 20 college credits before graduation.  This helps me to understand, first hand, the importance of earning credits toward post-secondary programming to offset the cost of post-high school education and training. Since high school graduation, I have gone on to attain several professional certifications and degrees.

Following high school, I attended Regency Beauty Institute to earn my Cosmetology license.  Over the years I’ve worked in several local salons to become a licensed salon manager and independent contractor.  During my career I specialized in corrective color, specialty coloring techniques, hair extensions, specialty and corrective skin care, and formal styling.  I’ve attended advanced training in hair color through Graham Webb, Joico, Wella International, and skin care with Pevonia Botanica, and to this day I regularly attend continuing education to stay current with new techniques and trends.

After cosmetology school I attended Concordia University, St. Paul to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education with licensure in Birth through 3rd grade.  Throughout my undergraduate program I actively explored the areas of Art, English, and Family Education.  Needless to say, while in school I quickly learned that I had passion for education, but moreover, the process of learning and the pursuit of lifelong knowledge and understanding had been set ablaze.  As I began my work in Early Childhood programming and development, I decided that I would like to work with learners of all ages and decided to continue my education with a Masters in Education at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis/St.Paul.

While studying at the U of M, I earned an Masters in Education with intial licensure in Family and Consumer Science.  Since completing my M.Ed, I have taken courses at St. Catherine’s and St. Thomas University, in areas of curriculum development and assessment, education for diverse populations, and fostering a positive educational environment.  I have gone on to earn my CTE licenses in Creative Design Careers and Early Childhood Careers, and have plans to pursue the remaining credits needed to earn my Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Development.  My goals have evolved over the years and lead me to better understand and relay to my students, the importance of growing content in our lives, while avoiding complacency though regular assessment of our goals and planning for the future.

In my personal life, I am one of 13 children, who grew up in a house with 5 of my sisters on a hobby farm in Burns Township.  I have been married for 17 years to my high school sweetheart, Sam, who owns a small Home Health Care company, Nordic Home Health Care in Anoka MN.  We live in Anoka, in a newly built home on 1st Avenue with our beautiful and vivacious 6-year-old daughter Ava who is currently attending 1st grade Lincoln Elementary, and 5-month-old foster son who is reaching new milestones with each passing day.  We share our home with my Mother-in-law, Theresa, who is a retired Techinical Writer, and my sister Angie, and NICU nurse at HCMS, as well as our 3-year-old golden retriever Luke.

I grew up in Anoka County 4-H and spent my time sewing, performing, creating, and showing animals of all shapes and sizes.  I love to sing, cook, sew, decorate, try new restaurants, hang out with my family, or spend time spoiling any one of my 22 (soon to be 24) nieces and nephews.

I love what I do, and very much look forward to getting to know each one of you on a personal level!  Here’s to a great year!
